Politics: In Memoriam

Teddy Kennedy, the Lion of the Senate, and youngest of the ill-fated Kennedy brothers who have contributed so much to make America a great nation, is dead.

To leave a message for his mourning family, you can go here.

Now that he is no longer with us, we must work harder than ever to pass the legislation that Senator Kennedy has fought for for so long. He wanted health care reform, and although we have lost his guiding hand, we cannot falter. We should reform health care, as we all know too well. In its own way, the legislation will be a fitting memorial to Senator Kennedy's memory.

Rest in peace, sir. Your lifetime of dedication to the causes of the common people will not be forgotten. Nor will your, and your family's, long tradition of service to the nation.

Driving into work today I heard once again that old tape of Ted Kennedy eulogizing his brother, RFK. And as I listened to his voice cracking with emotion under that heavy loss I couldn't also help but think this ultimate thought about Ted.

He saw wrong and tried to right it. He saw suffering and tried to heal it. And he saw war and tried to stop it.

We have lost a champion who will long be missed. Of whatever his failings in his life were, I don't think he ever claimed to be anything but human. HIs accomplishments on the other hand, were super human and should be a lesson to us all for if this county emulated half the compassion he lived, our problems would be solved. If only I could tell him, Thank you Senator Kennedy.

I have always been impressed in how Ted took on the roll of patriarch. With all the tragedies this family endured - he became the father figure for Bobby and John's children. I, for one, will miss him as the "lion of the senate." Fingers crossed that we can get a health care package passed, in Ted's honor!

What made Ted great was that even though he was himself wealthy, he never acted like those less fortunate than himself "deserved" to be, unlike the whole of the Republican Party, and too many Democrats.

despite his flaws (which he was the first to admit) - this man accomplished so much for so many - personally and politically

for 77 years he never rested, now i hope he does in peace

ps - the vitriol from the right has been nothing short of eye-ppopping

I am skipping the view and mouth foam from the Right. I can grieve perfectly well without a dose of bitters. A rather unconnected house guest in residence, when I told her I had heard of Senator Kennedy's death said "And this is a good thing, right?" I snapped "Not in THIS house." and walked away very quickly.

The day after his funeral (Sunday) there was an op ed in one of the local Northwest Arkansas papers that ridiculed him for his manners toward fellow members... It was bad enough to be run the day after his funeral, but the message was so damned harsh that I promptly replied with a letter to the editor. It has yet to be printed. We shall see...

FoTPC, you're so right. This country has lost a great man in Teddy Kennedy. And it's so sad that so many rightwingnuts are too blinded by hate to realize that.

TheMom, we owe the health care reform to Teddy Kennedy. It would be a fitting memoriam.

dave, you're so right. I don't know about his personal religious beliefs, but he embodied the Christian ideal of "as you do to the least among your brothers, so you do to me."

DC, you're right. Rest in peace, Teddy, you accomplished much. Rightwingnuttia can no longer see for the scales of hatred have settled over their eyes.

Good on ya, Labrys.

And good on ya too poetryman. We, the true silent majority need to start speaking out. We've been silent too fucking long.
