Please Answer This Question ...

My 11-year old daughter just asked me this question and I'd like someone to answer it for me ... because I sure didn't have an answer.

"Why do police officers and fire fighters make lots more money than teachers?"

I don't know why for fire fighters. I do know why for police officers -- overtime. Around here, base pay for teachers and police officers is about the same. But: police officers are hourly workers, while teachers are salaried workers. So when cops work more than 40 hours a week, they're paid time and a half. Most police forces in America are understaffed, so many cops work as much as 60 hours a week. So a cop with a base salary of $50K/year can earn $80K a year or more with enough overtime.

because, historically, most firefighters and police are men, most teachers are women. and teachers are not paid for their overtime.
